A traditional publisher pays you a small share of each sale. It picks the cover, the price and the release date, and it often keeps the rights for years.
Self-publishing fixes most of that. You keep full creative control and the rights, and Amazon KDP pays up to 70% royalties on ebooks in its main price band. It also hands you a lot of new jobs. If you have tried it, you know the catch. Every job the publisher did is now yours:
- Finding out who will buy your book, before you spend months on it.
- Getting a cover that sells in your genre. Readers do judge books by their covers.
- Editing. A book full of typos gets bad reviews fast, however good the ideas are.
- Formatting the ebook and the paperback so both pass Amazon's checks the first time. Or have me do it for you.
- Marketing: the keywords, the title, the book description and the Amazon ads that get the book seen.
Most of them don't matter much. A few matter a lot. I'll show you which are which.
