Most first books sell few copies in their first year. That is what the two best-known author surveys show, and it is the normal starting point, not a verdict on your book. This post covers what the surveys found, what to measure in the first 90 days instead of daily sales, and what to change first if the numbers stay flat.
How many copies does a first self-published book sell in year one?
Nobody publishes a reliable number for first books. What exists is surveys of authors, and they point the same way.
A Written Word Media survey of 1,346 authors, published on 02-Dec-25, found that about 44% earn under $100 a month from their books, about 28% earn $100 to $1,000, about 15% earn $1,000 to $5,000 and about 13% earn more than $5,000. Authors with fewer than four books were mostly in the lowest group, and authors with 25 or more books had a median of about $3,000 a month (Written Word Media). The figures are self-reported and were not verified, and the survey leans toward serious, prolific authors, so a first-time author may well do worse.
The Authors Guild’s 2023 survey of 5,699 published authors, which covers income for 2022, put the median book income for all authors, part-time included, at $2,000. Full-time self-published authors had a median of $12,800 (Authors Guild). That second number describes authors who write full time, not first books.
| Survey | Who it counts | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| Written Word Media, Dec 2025 | 1,346 indie authors, self-reported | About 44% earn under $100 a month; 13% earn over $5,000 |
| Authors Guild, Sep 2023 | 5,699 published authors, 2022 income | Median book income $2,000 for all authors; $12,800 for full-time self-published authors |
Neither survey tells you what your first twelve months will bring. They tell you the range, and that most authors start at the low end. I tell my own first-book story in how many books self-published authors sell.
What should I measure in the first 90 days instead of daily sales?
Daily sales are too small and too noisy to learn from. For three months, look at these instead:
- Reviews. How many honest reviews you have, and whether the first readers say what you hoped they would.
- Page reads. If the book is in Kindle Unlimited, KDP’s KENP report shows pages read. KDP says Dashboard reads can take 24 to 48 hours to appear, and the monthly figure is finalized near the 15th of the next month (KDP: reports).
- Read-through. If you have more than one book, count how many readers of book 1 go on to book 2.
- Email sign-ups. A list is the one audience you own. Ten readers who asked to hear about your next book are worth more than a good sales day.
- Visits that turn into orders. If you run a small ad test or send traffic yourself, compare clicks with orders. That tells you whether the book page works.
KDP’s Dashboard updates every 15 minutes and shows ebook orders within 24 hours of being placed, so checking it ten times a day adds nothing (KDP: reports). Look once a day, write the numbers down once a week, and judge the trend at day 90.
What should I change first if the numbers stay flat?
Change one thing at a time, in this order. It is my advice, not a rule from the surveys.
- The page a reader lands on. Compare cover, title and description with the best sellers in your niche.
- How readers find the book. Keywords and categories.
- Price and reviews. A price in line with similar books, and honest reviews from readers who read the book.
- The market itself. If the topic has few buyers, no change to the page will fix it.
The week-by-week version of this is in what to do after you publish your book. If you are asking whether the book is the problem or the setup, I’ll tell you why you are failing covers the most common mistakes. If the book is out and you are wondering whether to write the next one, read should I write book 2 if book 1 didn’t sell.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to have no sales in the first month?
Yes, it happens to many first books. KDP's Dashboard shows ebook orders within 24 hours and print orders within 24 hours after shipping, so a zero on the Dashboard usually means no orders yet, not a delay.
When do KENP page reads show up?
KDP says Kindle Unlimited page reads can take 24 to 48 hours to appear on the Dashboard, and the monthly figures are finalized near the 15th of the following month.
How many books do I need before I earn a living?
The Written Word Media survey found that authors with 25 or more books had a median of about $3,000 a month, while authors with 5 to 9 books had a median of about $50. Books needed to make a living is a separate question from a first year.
What counts as a successful first year?
That is your call, and it is worth deciding before you launch. A useful first-year goal is one you control, such as a finished book, a first batch of honest reviews and an email list that has started.
