Readers Say My Book Is AI. What Can I Do?

When a reader says your book was written by AI and you wrote every word, there is no button that proves it. What you can do is use the tools Amazon gives you, keep your head in public, and keep a record of how the book was made. Below: what Amazon will do, what to do about a lazy “this is AI” review, comments on ads, AI detectors, keeping a record, and what to say if you did use AI.

What will Amazon do about a review that says my book is AI?

KDP’s Customer Reviews page says the Amazon Community team manages customer reviews, including requests to remove reviews that break the Community Guidelines. If you believe a review does, click the Report link under it. The team investigates and takes appropriate action, but for privacy reasons it won’t share the outcome.

That page describes no way for an author to reply to a review, so don’t plan on answering in the reviews. You report, and then you wait without knowing.

What if the review only says “AI” and the person never read the book?

This is my advice, not Amazon’s: report it once if it breaks the rules, then leave it. Amazon’s Community Guidelines say it’s fine to question beliefs and expertise but to be respectful, and they don’t allow name-calling, attacks on people you disagree with, or libel, defamation or inflammatory content. A review that says nothing except “AI garbage” may or may not break those lines. Amazon decides, not you.

Don’t write to the reviewer and don’t ask friends to pile on. A calm, well-reviewed book page answers the accusation better than a fight does. For ways to build honest reviews, see how to get Amazon Kindle self-publishing reviews.

What about comments on my ads and social posts?

My advice: don’t argue under an ad. Arguing makes the thread longer, and the thread is what people see.

If a platform flagged the post, find out why before you assume it judged your book. Meta’s page on labeling AI-generated content says it adds an “AI info” label when it detects industry standard AI image indicators or when people disclose that they are uploading AI-generated content. Since September 2024, for content it detects was only modified or edited by AI tools, the label sits in the post’s menu. It still shows the label on content it detects was generated by an AI tool. So the label is about the image or video in the post, not your manuscript. If you used an AI image in the ad, that may be the reason.

Should I use an AI detector to prove I wrote it?

This part is my advice: don’t run your book through a detector to prove anything. A score is not proof either way, and you can’t hand one to a reader and expect it to settle the matter.

Don’t add typos on purpose, and don’t rewrite good sentences so they look more human. You would be making the book worse for the people who will actually read it. Edit the way you always have.

How do I keep a record that I wrote it?

Keep your drafts, notes and dated files. They are the record. If you write in Google Docs, version history lets you see earlier versions of a file: click Last edit at the top right. You need permission to edit the file to browse them. Save dated copies of your manuscript as you go as well, so the record doesn’t depend on one app.

What if I did use AI?

Give readers the same honest answer you gave KDP. KDP’s Content Guidelines say that if you created the content yourself and used AI-based tools to edit, refine, error-check or otherwise improve it, that is AI-assisted and you don’t have to tell KDP. Content an AI tool created is AI-generated, and KDP wants that reported. The full rules are in the KDP AI disclosure rules.

Want a second pair of eyes on your book page?

If you are dealing with an accusation, or you are worried about one before launch, book a free discovery session. We can look at your book’s page and reviews together and decide what is worth doing and what is better left alone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reply to a review that says my book is AI?

KDP's Customer Reviews page describes no way for an author to reply to a review. What it does describe is the Report link under the review, which goes to the Amazon Community team.

Will Amazon tell me what it did about my report?

No. KDP's page says that for privacy reasons the Amazon Community team won't share the outcome of its investigation.

Does the Meta AI info label mean my book is AI?

No. Meta says it adds the label when it detects industry standard AI image indicators or when people disclose AI-generated content. It is about the post, not your manuscript.

Do I have to tell KDP if I used AI to edit my book?

KDP calls AI used to edit, refine or error-check your own work AI-assisted and says it is not necessary to inform it. Content an AI tool created is AI-generated and has to be reported.
