You can publish an AI-narrated audiobook, but not on ACX unless ACX authorises it, and each store that does accept one has its own rules. ACX’s audio submission requirements (dated 15-Apr-26) say: “Your submitted audiobook must be narrated by a human unless otherwise authorized.” They also say unauthorized text-to-speech or AI in ACX titles is prohibited. Below is where an AI-narrated audiobook can go, what each place asks, and when I would use one. If you would rather use your own voice, read how to narrate your own audiobook. If listeners are already saying your book sounds like AI, read readers say my book is AI, what can I do?
Where can an AI-narrated audiobook go?
| Where | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ACX | Human narration unless authorized. Unauthorized text-to-speech or AI is prohibited. | ACX audio submission requirements |
| ACX Voice Replica | A narrator’s own AI copy of their voice, a limited beta. The product page shows “Narrated by Narrator’s voice replica”. | ACX voice replica FAQ |
| KDP Virtual Voice | An invite-only beta for eligible KDP ebooks, US marketplace only. | KDP |
| Spotify for Authors | Accepts digital voice narration from providers like Google Play Books and ElevenLabs. You select “This audiobook uses digital voice narration” at upload, and Spotify adds a sentence to the description. | Spotify |
| Google Play Books | Auto-narrated audiobooks program in beta, no program fee during the beta. You must own the audiobook rights and provide an EPUB. | Google program policies |
| Apple Books | Digital narration made from an ebook file, delivered through preferred partners. The author keeps the audiobook rights. | Apple Books for Authors |
Can I sell the same AI file in more than one store?
Google says you may sell downloaded auto-narrated audiobooks on other platforms, but they must also be for sale on Google Play in every country available for sale elsewhere, and the Google Play list price can’t exceed the price elsewhere. Spotify’s page says it does not currently share digital voice titles with referral partners. I have not found a page from the other stores that covers moving a file between them, so check each store’s rules before you plan on one file in several places.
Do I have to disclose AI narration?
Spotify adds the disclosure sentence for you when you tick the option. For KDP’s rules on AI content, read KDP’s AI disclosure rules. I won’t repeat them here. Whatever the store requires, tell listeners honestly in your own description if the voice is not human.
What do listeners think, and when would I use one?
This is my view, not a store rule. I can’t give you a survey on how listeners feel about AI voices, so I won’t pretend to. My own thinking: a human voice makes a bigger difference for fiction, memoir and anything where the author’s voice is part of the book. An AI voice can make sense for short nonfiction, reference books or a test when you have no budget for a narrator. If you can afford a human, how to get your audiobooks produced on ACX shows the route I use.
