It is frequently asked mostly by writers as well as those who are interested to jump into self-publishing. Find out how many books are self published annually and get to know about a secret that will help you on your self-publishing journey.
I Wasn't Aware Of The Rules
Today's question has three answers. The third answer is a secret as to why all of the books that are being produced out there and the continuing increase in that doesn't necessarily mean you're going to lose money.
The question that was sent in today was how many books are self published annually? Now, there's a good reason somebody would want to know this. If you're thinking about jumping into self-publishing a book, you want to know if it's going to sell.
But the problem is if there are too many books on the market and the market is being flooded with books, well then, how would you even know that you have a good chance of seeing those sales come through at all? This is a very common question. It is actually a very good one too.
If lots of people have written the books and you're just coming up with one more book on the same subjects that these books are already hitting, and if your book is of the same quality or less than the other books that are hitting the market, of course, you're going to see your sales go down.
So this is a big concern that a lot of people have and assume that maybe you shouldn't get into self-publishing, simply because of this quantity of books. Before we get into the answers, check out my free Self-Publishing Checklist to help you get started on your self-publishing journey.
So let's get into it. How many books are self published annually? Well, when I first got started, I wasn't even aware of how many books.
I just simply jumped in and I started putting out my first book. I wasn't optimizing the book and I didn't do keyword research. All of this stuff was very distant.
I simply wasn't aware of all of the little rules, tricks, and strategies around getting a book to sell. Finding underserved markets and all sorts of things I wasn't doing. I did, fortunately, chose a market that was a reasonably good market to jump into.

But it still wasn't even a fantastic market. It was just simply an okay market. It was with achieving your goals and breaking down tasks and finding ways to efficiently get things done.
The Three-Fold Answer
And for me, I jumped into that market and I found some sales. Now obviously, other books in the same genre were selling a lot more books than mine. But I didn't fully understand the quantity and the extreme jump in the rate of new books being published.
So, how many books are self published annually? Well, the answer is nearly two million books are published annually. And it depends upon where you go and what percentage is self-published.
And that number continues to grow. So when we're looking at the total number of books, this can be a little overwhelming. Because if two million, well then clearly how are they going to ever find your specific book?
But the thing is as it continues to grow, it's making it more and more difficult on the self-publishing front in some ways to sell more books. But that brings us into today's secret answer of the day.
The answer to jumping and breaking through all of these books is three-fold. Even though there's actually a fourth point but we'll get to that in a second. So, the first thing is you need to choose the right niche or sub-niche.
In other words, we need to find out which niches are selling the most or selling lots of books. And yet there are not that many books available in that niche. So it could be anything from vertical gardening or puppy training or whatever it might be that you would be looking at.
Then, we simply use a tool as I use personally which is Kindle Spy to find which book topics are selling a lot of copies. But then you would do a check to see how many books exist in that area.

And if there's not that many, that ratio gives you the ability to find these underserved niches. So that's our first rule and that is the most important. If you violate this one then it's going to be difficult for you to make a lot of sales.
Number two is optimizing your book. Your cover is the most important, the title maybe even more important than the cover. Then your description and your table of contents.
And then finally the keywords you choose and then the content itself. In fact, the content is less important than the others. The content will impact whether or not you get negative reviews which will result in your book not selling.
Published It On Different Channels
You don't even need great reviews, you just need okay reviews coming in. Three stars are better coming in for your book. It's your cover and the title that really ends up selling the book and not so much the content itself.
That is something a lot of people don't fully understand. But if it's not optimized and you won't even get the traffic in the first place, when they see it they won't buy the book because the cover is terrible or whatever.
So the next one is running ads. If you're not running ads then you're going to be losing money. And then the distribution trying to get it out to as many different locations as you possibly can to distribute your book to win.
The final, very important thing is that even though more books are being published, you have to keep in mind that with electricity coming along and the expanse of people getting smartphones all over the world, the population that's getting access to these books is jumping.
Assuming your book is in English, well, now we have 25% of the earth's population and those people getting access to smart readers. This is the reason why it's important with Kindle and EPUB, having your books in as many different distribution channels as possible.

You'll have more readers. So you may have more of a given product on the market, but you'll have more people consuming that product. And that is something that a lot of people don't consider.
When we're looking at these 2 million books a year, it's that we can still win even in all this noise. We can draw in the customers that we're going to need to make more sales.
