Book formatting costs about $10 to $100 on Fiverr, about $150 to $460 from freelancers and studios, and around $800 from Reedsy professionals. Doing it yourself costs between nothing and $250 for a tool, plus your time. Below is what each option gets you, what makes a quote go up, and when doing it yourself is the better call.
How much does book formatting cost compared?
These are ranges, not quotes. Your book’s length and layout decide where it lands.
| Option | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fiverr gigs | About $10 to $100 | Quality varies a lot. Ask for a sample page. |
| Freelancers and studios | About $150 to $460 | Often priced per book, sometimes per word or page. |
| Reedsy professionals | Around $800 | Vetted freelancers, quoted per project. |
| Reedsy Studio | Free | Core writing and formatting are free (Reedsy Studio). |
| Kindle Create | Free | Made by Amazon. |
| Atticus | $147 one-time | Windows, Mac, Linux and in a browser (Kindlepreneur review, updated 30-Oct-26). |
| Vellum | $200 ebooks, $250 with print | Mac only (Vellum). |
| My formatting service | $67 to $207 | Set by word count. See below. |
The freelancer, Fiverr and Reedsy figures are the ranges I use when I compare options. The tool prices are as listed on 02-Nov-26. Prices move, so check the tool’s own page and ask for a quote before you commit.
What makes book formatting cost more?
A plain-text novel is the cheapest book to format. These things raise the price:
- Images. Each one has to be placed, sized and checked, and print needs them at a high resolution.
- Tables. They break easily on a Kindle screen, so they take extra work.
- Footnotes and endnotes. Links in the ebook and numbering in print both have to work.
- A print edition. The print PDF is a second file, and it needs the right margins for the page count.
- More than one trim size. Each size is its own layout. KDP lists its sizes.
- Revisions. One round is often included. More rounds are often charged.
- Special layouts. Poetry, workbooks, colour interiors and children’s books take more care.
Ask three things before you pay anyone: does the price include both the EPUB and the print PDF, how many revision rounds are included, and how long delivery takes.
When is doing it yourself the right choice?
If you want to learn a tool, do it yourself. Atticus, Vellum, Reedsy Studio and Kindle Create all produce real, upload-ready files, and plenty of authors use them well. I moved to Atticus myself and still recommend it (why I left Jutoh). It suits a text-heavy book, a first book you want to control, or a series where you will format again and again, because the tool pays for itself on the second book.
Plan on a day or two for a first book. Then check the preview page by page. For the step-by-step, read how to format a book for KDP and IngramSpark.
When is it worth paying someone?
Pay when your time is worth more than the fee, you have a deadline, or the book is awkward. A workbook, a photo-heavy book or a book full of footnotes can eat a week in a tool. For what can go wrong when the formatting is skipped or rushed, see why you should format your book properly. If you do hire someone, how to hire a book formatter covers what to check before you pay.
What does my formatting service cost?
It is $67 to $207, by word count. The ebook alone is the first price, and the ebook plus a print-ready PDF is the second.
| Manuscript | Ebook | Ebook plus print PDF |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 60,000 words | $67 | $127 |
| 60,001 to 120,000 words | $97 | $167 |
| Over 120,000 words | $127 | $207 |
Your book is formatted by my team and checked by me, and your text is never edited. It comes back within 3 business days of your complete manuscript, with one revision round included and a 7-day money-back guarantee. A second trim size or an extra revision round is $29.
You can see the house styles and sample pages, and order, on the book formatting page.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to format a book myself?
In cash, yes. Reedsy Studio and Kindle Create are free and Atticus is $147 once. The cost is your time, usually a day or two for a first book, plus more if it has images or tables.
Do I pay extra for the print version?
Usually yes. The ebook and the print PDF are two files, and many formatters price them separately. Check whether the quote covers both before you accept it.
Which tool should I use if I format it myself?
I use and recommend Atticus. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux for $147 once. Reedsy Studio and Kindle Create are free if your book is simple.
